As a truck driver, Election Day may not be that big a deal. After all, it’s not like you can vote, right? Wrong! You can vote, even if you aren’t going to be home for the actual Election Day, you can still cast your vote for the next President.
Excluding in person voting on Election Day, which is not always an option for truck drivers, there are three ways to vote. One way is to register for early voting. There are currently 32 states in which registered voters may qualify to cast their ballot before the actual Election Day. If you are going to miss the Election by just a few days, this might be something worth considering.
If you don’t think early voting will work for you however, there is another option called absentee voting. The way this works, is your state will mail a ballot to you. Once you receive the ballot, you simply check your vote and return it either in the mail or in person. This option is available in all states, however, some states require voters to cast a petition for absentee voting including a reason why you think you should be eligible.
The third option is mail voting. This is where a state will mail a ballot to all registered voters instead of offering in-person voting. Before you get too excited about this option, I should tell you; mail voting is only done in Washington and Oregon and is an automated process.
Now that you know how to vote, you need to make sure you are eligible. To do this, you need to register. If you would like to vote but are not registered, you can register right now. In the past, you had to go to your city clerk or some other government location to register, but not you can do it in about 3 minutes online. I know, because I just did it. To do this, you will need your address and a valid driver’s license number. There are a number of websites you can go to that will allow you to register online. These include : www.rockthevote.com and www.canivote.org. Or, you can simply go on Google and type “register to vote” in the search bar.
The ability to vote is a great and unique opportunity, not all countries have the ability to choose their leader. As a truck driver, your vote matters and now you know you can vote. Take advantage of your rights and register to vote today.
