As a truck driver, you generally live a life on the road. As the old saying goes; if the wheels ain’t turning, you ain’t earning. Some people go into the trucking industry thinking they know what to expect, but then once they get out there they find things are a little bit different than what they thought. One of the hardest things many drivers notice when first starting out is that they miss their family and friends. You’re used to seeing them every day and now you’re not. It’s absolutely normal to miss them, but there are ways to make it easier.
The first thing you need to realize is that trucking isn’t what it used to be. In the old days, a driver couldn’t talk to his family every night. He had to wait until he could get to a payphone or a terminal with phones. Now, however, most people have a phone in their pocket. You can speak to your family and friends every night. You can still say goodnight to your kids and you can still hear about your spouse’s day, each and every day.
Not only that, but with technology advancing as it is, you can even see your family! With phones that have “Face Time” or through programs like Skype, all you need is an internet connection and the next thing you know, you are speaking to everyone back home face to face.
Even if it is just for a little while because you are tired after a long day of driving, you are still able to talk to your friends and family while you’re out on the road. A life on the road can be hard at times. Ask any truck driver and they will tell you that, but they will also tell you that they wouldn’t trade it for anything. There is no other job out there like that of a truck driver, with the open road and the whole nation to discover, why wouldn’t you want to get behind the wheel as soon as possible? And with advances in technology, keeping in touch while on the road is easier than ever before, and it’s just going to get easier from here.
