SMITHFIELD FOODS AND C.R. ENGLAND PARTNER TO SUPPORT THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA FOOD BANK
Part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes® 2018 Tour and C.R. England’s “One Initiative”
Hampton, Va. – July 23, 2018 – Smithfield Foods, Inc. and C.R. England—one of North America’s largest refrigerated transportation companies—joined forces to support the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank through volunteerism and a donation of more than 38,000 pounds of protein. The participation from both companies will help many individuals and families fight hunger across the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank’s service area, which includes nine counties in Virginia.
“This donation from Smithfield Foods and the support we have received from C.R. England will help serve those in need across the Greater Peninsula,” said Karen Joyner, CEO of Virginia Peninsula Food Bank. “Hunger-relief is a collaborative effort. Through partnership, cooperation, and dedication, we can help lead the effort toward a hunger-free and properly nourished community.”
Smithfield’s donation of protein, equivalent to more than 152,000 servings, was part of the company’s 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® donation tour. Now in the program’s 10th year, Helping Hungry Homes® is Smithfield’s signature hunger-relief initiative focused on alleviating hunger and helping Americans become more food secure.
As the dedicated carrier for Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes® program, C.R. England participated with its One Initiative – a mission to feed one million children per year through organized donations from business-transaction proceeds. One Initiative matches one meal donation to a hungry child per every delivery completed by the company. As a dedicated food carrier, the countless truckloads distributed by C.R. England each day represent thousands of children receiving a meal. Several local C.R. England employees volunteered on the day of the donation to pack meals in support of the Foodbank’s hunger-relief programs.
“We believe that proper nutrition and food-security lead to greater happiness and success,” said David Allred, director of management services for C.R. England. “We are dedicated to having our deliveries make a greater difference. With the help of community-focused partners like Smithfield and the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank, we are One – United Against Childhood Hunger.”
This is the 40th large scale protein donation made by Smithfield to food banks across the country during its 2018 Helping Hungry Homes® tour. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Smithfield has provided more than 100 million servings of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs nationwide.
“At Smithfield, we are committed to improving food security across the country and eliminating hunger in the communities we call home,” said Jonathan Toms, associate manager of charitable initiatives for Smithfield Foods and board member at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. “By joining forces with the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and C.R. England, we are able to provide support and minimize hunger in America one truck load at a time.”
