As a customer of C.R. England, you benefit from all the resources and experience of a global transportation leader. Four generations after Chester R. England began hauling produce from farm to market in northern Utah with a single truck, C.R. England is known worldwide for delivering diversified, innovative transportation solutions. That leadership position also commands us to seek out ways to conserve energy and lower greenhouse gas emissions across all operations. We’re playing an important role among transportation companies in improving aerodynamics, reducing vehicle weight, and boosting fuel economy. Our commitment to sustainability is recognized within the transportation industry and by the federal government.
C.R. England is proud to be a Carrier in the SmartWay Transport Partner program. SmartWay has recognized us for our outstanding environmental performance utilizing some of the most available fuel saving strategies. As a Transport Partner, we have committed to continually find ways to improve our environmental performance.
We are passionate about sustainability and continually finding ways incorporate environmental improvements into our everyday business activities as well as our long term goals. We provide a distinctive approach to improving our sustainability through our testing, equipment enhancements, technological improvements, driving training programs, and alternative transportation modes.

Improvements
Improvements made over time by C.R. England to help stay green:
Increased Aerodynamics: C.R. England is committed to using the most aerodynamic tractors that are available. We equip all our tractor and trailer models with aero kits and side skirts as well as aluminum wheels to reduce weight.
Tire Strategy: C.R. England has been using Low Rolling Resistance tires since 2008. We are also highly focused on maintaining proper air pressures in all our vehicles to improve maximum efficiency
Idling Strategy: C.R. England has enforced no-idle and idle reduction policies. There have been significant and continual improvements through four idle focus areas:
- Fleet Management: Increased attention to seasonal idle goal management is detailed in weekly performance management by division, fleet and truck. Seasonal idle goals adjust based on temperature.
- Driver Education: We provide educational training on idle alternatives.
- Equipment and Technology Improvements: All C.R. England trucks come equipped with economical bunk heaters to prevent excessive idling for heat during the winter months. Ambient sensors and computer programming also help us control excessive idle by preventing the ability to idle the truck when the temperature is between 20 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Company Teaming Initiative: Our Team Transit Advantage service offers increased transit times and reduced idle. Eliminating solo drivers will also help mitigate excessive idling due to Hours of Service mandates
Speed Reduction: New trucks entering our fleet have been set to 62 MPH. Since our speed reduction policy, we have seen a dramatic change in our MPG numbers year after year.
Technological: C.R. England has implemented new technologies to increase efficiency as well as reduce fuel consumption. These technologies look at fleet optimization to reduce deadhead and out-of-route miles and un-tethered trailer tracking.
In-Office Programs: The company supports and encourages in-office recycling programs. C.R. England has both shredder bins and bins that hold paper, cardboard, plastic, and aluminum around the company for employee use as well as recycling tires, solvents, oil, and more.
Services
Intermodal: C.R. England expanded our intermodal network significantly. Intermodal is three times more fuel efficient than hauling loads over-the-road. This service offering has been an important focus to C.R. England’s carbon footprint improvements. Our TOFC refrigerated offering appeals to shippers that need more lading capacity. TempStack, the 53’ refrigerated container network, is continuing to expand. Both our TOFC and TempStack fleets utilize ultra-lightweight day cab tractors to allow for increased MPG as well as the ability for more weight to be put onto the container and trailer.
Liquid Natural Gas Tractors: In October 2011, C.R. England’s Dedicated division entered into a full-service lease agreement on five day cab tractors powered with a 15-liter LNG engine. These engines use duel fuel technology. The division operates the equipment in an existing dedicated operation on routes between Ontario, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev. We will continue to test this technology in hopes to expand the fleet. We strive to reduce our dependence on foreign oil and continue to look at this technology as a sustainable option in the future.
